Safety: We live here year-round along with tens of thousands of other gringos from the US & Canada, and we can honestly say we don’t worry about our safety here. Yes, there are all kinds of news articles about violence in Mexico but the majority of the dangerous areas are around the border several hundred miles from here. You would be closer to it in Texas or Arizona. That being said, it wouldn’t be wise anywhere to walk into a dark alley in the middle of the night drunk as a skunk with your wallet hanging wide open. Use your common sense and you should be just fine.
Electricity: The electricity in Mexico is the same as in the US & Canada. Feel free to bring your phone chargers & curling irons. No need for a converter.
Water: Tap water in Puerto Vallarta is fine to drink, so if you happen to open your mouth in the shower or swallow a sip while brushing your teeth, don’t worry! It doesn’t necessarily taste very good, so most people still choose to drink bottled water instead. Also, you can order a glass of water in a restaurant here without worry. The restaurants do serve bottled water as their house water, though they may not tell you that. They make money on selling the single-serving bottles, but most likely they have a 5 gallon water cooler that they use for house water…and that’s free.
