If you like to eat good food (and really, who doesn’t like to eat good food?), then the best time of the year to be here in Puerto Vallarta is during Restaurant Week…or weeks, as the case may be. Falling the last 2 weeks of May each year, Restaurant Week is a great opportunity for tourists and locals alike to get out and try some new places or maybe try a new dish at a favorite hangout.
This year, there are 40 featured restaurants from around the Banderas Bay, each offering a 3 course meal for $229 to $349 pesos. That’s equal to about $14 to $21 US, an unheard of possibility for fine dining in the US!
Here are a few examples of some of the restaurants we’ll be patronizing this week!
Hacienda San Angel: Located in the Gringo Gulch neighborhood in downtown Puerto Vallarta, Hacienda San Angel was once the private home to Richard Burton, star of “Night of the Iguana” which was filmed locally in the mid 1960’s. Now, Hacienda San Angel is a spectacular boutique hotel and boasts one of the finest restaurants in town. I’ll be having the watermelon gazpacho to start, Israeli couscous primavera for my main course and white chocolate mousse for dessert. Price $349 pesos
Café des Artistes: Café des Artistes is THE fine dining establishment in Puerto Vallarta! The meals are not just plates of food…they are works of art. Delighting you visually, in addition to pleasing your palate, Café des Artistes is a gastronomic experience and the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. My choices for dinner there this week will include Vichyssoise for an appetizer, followed by the Sonoran beef filet au red wine for my entree, and topped off with the Pavlova for dessert. Price $349 pesos
Barrio Bistro: Tucked away into the residential neighborhood of Versailles is Barrio Bistro, a gem of a place that has quickly become a local’s favorite. While only 10 minutes from the hustle bustle that is downtown, Versailles is a charming, quiet suburb, and Chef Guillermo “Memo” Wolf literally welcomes you into his home there. The menu changes regularly, based on fresh seasonal ingredients and at the whim of the master. This week’s Restaurant Week menu includes some amazing options. I think I’ll start with goat cheese and corn wontons, then Amaranth crusted red snapper for dinner, and cinnamon churros for dessert. Price $229 pesos
